Damayan’s Free Health Screening at the Little Manila Street Food Festival

“Damayan Health Screening is important to our community so we can help fellow Filipinos and other ethnicities, who have health issues but are not able to financially handle it or have a hard time heading to the health clinic/hospital. Free Doctors, glucose screening, blood pressure check, and more are a big help for us. If you have a healthy community, you have healthy members, too. Thank you to the Damayan staff that continuously support us all. God bless us.”

(Damayan Health Screening is important to our community. Dahil para matulungan ang ating mga kababayan at ibang lahi na may mga sakit na hindi kaya sa bulsa. At hirap maka punta ng pagamutan. Free doctors, glucose screening, blood pressure, and  more is big help for us. Kaya if you have a healthy community, you have healthy members too. Thanks a lot to Damayan staff na walang sawang suporta sa atin lahat. God bless us, ❤️🙏,” Ate Careen J., Damayan Member)

On rainy September 10th one month ago, 78 workers participated in Damayan’s Free Health Screening at the Little Manila Street Food Festival at Woodside, Queens. With the funding support of the NYS Department of Health, and in partnership with the Asian American Federation, Nanum Foundation, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, as well as the medical staff from United Medical Practice and Dr. Zenaida Santos, Damayan pursued one of its core programs of delivering critical services for the community—fighting for  health services for our community as a basic human right!

The free health screening included Doctor consultation, blood pressure and glucose screenings, and distribution of free glucometers and COVID test kits. Through sustained partnership with health allies, Damayan once again demonstrated that despite being undocumented and uninsured, basic health services could be accessible to our members if they stay organized with Damayan. Unfortunately, the health care system in the US is not meant to provide even basic services to undocumented and uninsured migrant workers. The government not only fails to educate workers about their right to health care or insurance options, but also simply does not allocate enough resources to take care of our communities’ basic health. Despite these challenges, Damayan, with support from our funders and allies, will continue to organize and fight for low-wage migrant workers in NYC and beyond.

The staff, workers leaders and volunteers have all hands on deck to give out free health services to the community

Join us for our next event, where Damayan will pursue another tenet of our mission— empowering workers to fight for their labor rights. Come to the Damayan WeRise Nanny Training Session 1, Saturday, October 21, 2023, 10 am-6 pm. RSVP Required, please call 2125646057.
