Free Legal Assistance for Migrant Workers

On Saturday, April 22nd, Damayan provided a free Legal Clinic at The People’s Forum, where Damayan members received free labor and immigration consultations with pro bono attorneys. Guest attorneys and Damayan allies from three different groups: New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), TakeRoot Justice, and Eisner Dictor & Lamadrid, P.C. Attorneys at Law provided these vital consultation services. 

Before the consultations, Lydia Catina, Damayan Organizer and Case Manager, led the Damayan Case Management System and Workflow Orientation, ensuring transparency about how the workers can approach their current or prospective labor and immigration cases and questions to the attorneys. Often, legitimate and much-needed legal consultations are inaccessible to our members because of its high costs. Through our free Legal Clinic, Damayan aims to remove this barrier to justice and thus further lift our members up—giving our members the opportunity and courage to seek assistance and guidance from the pro bono attorneys.
