Earlier tonight, Damayan Executive Director Riya Ortiz received the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) - Metro New York’s 2023 Bayani (Hero) Award at One World Trade Center in New York City! FANHS-MNY recognized Riya's and Damayan’s “impactful and critical services, in education, community organizing, and mobilizing of Filipinos.”
“I’m not in this work to be a hero. Damayan is not in this work to become heroes. The heroes are the nameless, faceless migrant workers and survivors who gather the courage and strength to stand against their traffickers and abusive employers,” Riya said.
