Damayan WeRise Nanny Trainings Module 1 and 2 Summary

“The training was important so we can fight for our rights as immigrant workers here in the country of the United States, and so that we can protect ourselves from people who hate Asians like us and be prepared for events that we do not expect while we are on our way to our respective jobs…”-Ate M.K., Damayan Member

“Importante ang event para puede natin ipaglaban ang ating karapatan sa immigrant workers dito sa bansa ng Estados Unidos. At para kaya natin ipag tanggol ang ating sarili sa mga taong may puot sa katulad natin mga Asians at kung ano mang mga pangyayari na hindi natin inaasahan habang tayo ay patungo sa atin kanya-kanyang mga trabaho…”

-Ate M.K., Damayan Member

On the first day of the Damayan WeRise Nanny Trainings on October 21st, Filipino domestic workers sharpened their professional nanny skills, while relearning techniques against Anti-Asian violence. Our day included the following:

• WeRise Module 1: Workers’ Rights: WeRise presenters Doris and Mayra presented about workers’ rights, and workers practiced calculating overtime pay, recognizing workers’ rights violations, and learning about bills that protect them! This module boosted workers’ confidence in fighting for their rights.

• WeRise Module 2: Negotiations: Workers were empowered to negotiate wages/benefits and to establish employer boundaries. Workers learned about domestic worker organizing history and the importance of portfolios, work-agreements, and formal interviews.

• Hope Against Hate Debrief: Participants practiced identifying and de-escalating Anti-Asian violence that involves them or others. These trainings are vital as Anti-Asian violence did not disappear in the U.S.

• Introduction to Barnard College’s “Building Worker Power” Course: Barnard College students introduced their history class’ goal to create a comprehensive 20-year timeline of Damayan’s most impactful milestones. Damayan will revisit our impressive history and ground ourselves in our mission, while empowering current leaders to continue organizing for migrant workers’ rights.
